Maintenance Mechanic

Mount Airy, NC - Plant


Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Other duties may be assigned.


Level A

  • Meet all safety training requirements
  • Know and wear all PPE (personal protective equipment) properly
  • Know location of all emergency stops
  • Housekeeping
  • Lubrication of equipment
  • Basic repair of auxiliary components
  • Read micrometer, calipers and depth gauges
  • Operate hand  and power tools
  • Basic plant machine function
  • Assist in repairing machinery
  • Minor forklift repair
  • Change straps, heads, etc. on welder
  • Change deform wheels on draw machine
  • Butt welder adjustment and repair
  • Stripper adjustments and repair
  • Lighting/Ballast
  • Obtain forklift license
  • Operate man lift
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical safety and general safety requirements
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of safe and proper use of basic electrical diagnostic equipment (volt/ohm meters, meggers, etc.)




Level B

  • Basic multimeter functions (fuses, conductivity)
  • Familiarity of plant production equipment
  • Troubleshoot polarity
  • Attend in-house polarity training
  • Knowledge of polarity on all welders
  • Setup and operation of torches
  • Setup and operation of arc and mig welders
  • Basic troubleshooting skills (hydraulics, electrical, mechanical)
  • Basic mechanical repair on all plant equipment
  • Basic hydraulic knowledge
  • Basic arc and mig welding
  • Basic electrical repair on all plant equipment
  • Basic troubleshooting skills
  • Basic knowledge of welder and draw machine operating capability


Level C

  • Perform preventative maintenance
    • Change bearings and wear components
    • Replace belts, pulleys, drive components and adjust
    • Drill and tap holes and perform grinding/sanding operations
    • Read single component blueprints, installation and arrangement drawings
    • Operate vertical and horizontal band saws
    • Thread and drill for installation to include:
      • Thread terminology
      • Top drill sizes
      • Fastener terminology
      • Drill sizes and uses
      • Troubleshoot electrical power distribution systems and make replacements as needed
      • Identify component type construction and application:
        • Valves
        • Pumps
        • Fitters/strainers
        • Radiators/cooling towers/heat exchanges
        • Rotating machinery
        • Mobile equipment
        • Ability to operate all draw machines and welders for the purpose of troubleshooting their functions
        • Remove and install:
          • Table
          • Arms
          • Straps
          • Heads
          • Finger shafts
          • Magazine
          • External parts of welder (overhaul)
          • Remove and install blocks and gearboxes of draw machines

Level D

  • Disassemble, reassemble and reinstall hydraulic and pneumatic single components such as:
    • Centrifugal pumps
    • Hydraulic cylinders
    • Manually operated valves
    • Troubleshoot components and diagnose trouble source for: 
      • Pump failure
      • Drive failure
      • Loss of rotation
      • Hydraulic failures
      • Loss of flow (air, water, oil)
      • Loss of cooling
      • Locate and repair leak sources
      • Pressurized gas system problems
      • Remove, repair and install:
        • Table
        • Arms
        • Straps
        • Heads
        • Finger shafts
        • Magazine
        • External parts of welder (overhaul)
        • Install welder transformer
        • Advanced hydraulic and mechanical:
          • Troubleshoot:
            • Relief valves
            • Flow valves
            • Cartridge valves
            • Pumps, etc.
  • Axial piston pump repair
  • Gear pump repair
  • Proficient in blueprint reading
  • Remove and install all internal parts in a welder
  • Setup gearbox on draw machine (bull block and dead block)
  • Responsible to train others
  • Lead overhaul
  • Be on call for afterhours service calls


Level E

  • Must be competent in planning and completing preventative maintenance
  • Must be able to perform retrofits on all major equipment
  • Must be proactive in plant improvements
  • Must have trained personnel in Skill Sets A - C
